How Miss Peabody’s Began
Our Story
Miss Peabody’s Southern Tea Cakes was started as an act of self-love. The company’s Founder/Owner, Pamela Richard, had just been let go from her job. Unsure what her next move would be inspiration struck while watching an episode of The Great British Baking Show. She began to remember her grandmother baking tea cakes for her siblings and cousins. She recalled the immense amount of care and compassion she experienced sitting in her grandmother’s kitchen.
Pamela was no longer that little girl with two bouncy pigtails but she knew baking would nurture and comfort her during this time away from work. She had always loved baking with her grandmother. She had even been a given special name, Miss Peabody, a throwback to the Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show since she had always worn glasses.
It all became clear what she needed to do and in November 2017 Miss Peabody’s was born. “When I’m baking, I can feel my grandmother hugging me.” She often tells her customers that baking tea cakes are her way of remembering the importance of loving each other. An old tradition that can still heal the world one tea cake at a time.
Who Is Miss Peabody?
Miss Peabody was the nickname given to Pamela by her Grandma Helen. Her grandmother was from Simmsport, Louisiana, a small town located about two half hours south of New Orleans. Pamela was the first of all the grandchildren which gave her seniority for helping cook with her Grandma Helen in the kitchen. You could often find Grandma Helen making a pot of beans, okra and tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. Pamela paid close attention to everything she made. Grandma Helen’s home was always filled with family and friends. No special occasion was needed to stop by for a plate of her amazing food.
One of Grandma Helen’s specialties were her tea cakes. It was a sweet treat that poor people could afford to make. Grandma Helen would allow Pamela to help pour the dry and wet ingredients in a bowl and mix. By the time she was ten years old she was Grandma Helen’s official batter taster. Pamela often jokes that she comes from a long line of cooks. “For us there is no greater love than a well prepared meal over a shared laugh.”
This southern treat represents a time when families spent more time together and being neighborly was a way of life. Miss Peabody’s Tea Cakes hope to inspire memories that remind you of the importance of caring for others.
